Landscape FAQ

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about our landscape supplies & products.
Please don’t hesitate to send us an email if you have any other questions or would like more information.

What is 1 yard?

One cubic yard is 3′ wide by 3′ long by 3′ tall. Put another way, it is about 4 contractor wheelbarrows heaping full.

How much area will 1 yard cover?

One cubic yard will cover a 10’ by 10’ area with a depth of about 3”, or 100 square feet at about 3” deep.

How many yards are in 1 unit?

There are 7.5 cubic yards in 1 unit.

What is the difference between 1 yard and 1 unit?

1 cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 2.5″ depth. 1 unit covers about 1,000 square feet at about 3″ depth. In a pile, 1 unit looks like it is about the same size as a Volkswagen Bug.

Can you deliver more than 1 product in a load?

Yes, we have split-load dump trucks that can deliver up to two different products at a time to your driveway.

Can we pick up products?

Certainly! If you’d like more information on how much your desired product weighs and how much you could haul with your vehicle, please call us 503-638-1011.

Do you have an organic soil product?

Yes, our S&H Premium Compost is OMRI Listed for organic use. Made from decomposed leaves, branches and yard debris, our garden compost is stable, dark and beautiful with natural slow release nutrients to grow healthy plants, fruits and veggies for several years.

How do I determine how much barkdust I will need?

Either measure, or step off your flower beds or area you would like to cover, and multiply your length and width. Now you need to decide the depth you need. With the square footage and depth, refer to more info on our Area Calculator page. This method works for rock and soil also.

How thick should I spread my barkdust?

A good rule of thumb would be 3″. That will help aid in weed control and water retention during the hot summer months. During the winter it will also help to insulate your plants.
