  • What is in the blended soil?
Our blended soil is a carefully balanced mixture designed to provide rich nutrients and excellent drainage for a variety of planting needs. It is made up of one-third premium compost, one-third mushroom compost, and one-third sandy loam. This combination creates a high-quality growing medium that supports healthy root development, retains moisture effectively, and allows for proper airflow within the soil structure. It’s ideal for flower beds, vegetable gardens, and raised planters.
  • What is Portland mix?
Portland mix is a versatile soil blend designed for planting and landscaping projects that require balanced drainage and structure. It consists of 50% fill sand, 40% compost, and 10% fill dirt. This blend is ideal for areas that need a sturdy but fertile base, such as garden beds or lawn installations. The sand improves drainage, the compost provides nutrients, and the fill dirt adds volume and body to the mix.
  • What’s the difference between Fir and Hemlock?
The primary differences between Fir and Hemlock come down to texture, splintering, and weed suppression performance. Hemlock is often chosen for its smoother texture and reduced splintering compared to Fir. While it's still possible to get a splinter, Hemlock splinters far less than Fir, making it a preferred option for families with children or pets—especially in play areas or pet zones. Fir, on the other hand, has a rougher texture and is more prone to splintering, which may not be ideal in spaces with a lot of hands or paws. Only Fresh Fir, Fresh Hemlock, and Hog Fuel provide effective weed suppression when applied over a properly weeded area, as these materials do not contain compost that might promote weed growth. Both help with moisture retention and soil temperature regulation, but for safer, cleaner, and more effective results, Fresh Hemlock or Fresh Fir is your best bet.
  • What is mulch?
Mulch is a general term used to describe a protective layer of material that is applied to the surface of soil in landscaping and gardening. It commonly consists of organic matter such as compost or a mixture of bark dust and compost. Mulch serves multiple purposes: it helps retain soil moisture, regulates temperature, reduces weed growth, and enhances the appearance of garden beds. Over time, organic mulch also breaks down, enriching the soil with nutrients.
  • What does "minus" mean when referring to materials?
In landscaping terms, "minus" refers to crushed rock or gravel that contains fine particles or “fines.” These fines fill in the gaps between the larger pieces, creating a compact, stable surface. Because of the presence of these smaller particles, minus material often appears dusty or “dirty.” It’s commonly used for pathways, base layers under pavers, and driveways due to its excellent compaction properties.
  • What is premium organic compost made of?
Premium organic compost is made entirely from composted yard debris such as grass clippings, leaves, branches, and other organic materials. This composting process breaks down the natural matter into a nutrient-rich soil amendment that improves soil structure, boosts microbial activity, and enhances the overall health of your garden or landscape. It’s an eco-friendly way to recycle green waste while feeding your soil.
  • What is the best product for a planter bed?
For optimal plant growth and root health, blended soil is the best product to use in planter beds. Its combination of composts and sandy loam creates a well-balanced environment that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. It also provides the nutrients necessary to support a wide range of plants, from vegetables to ornamentals.
  • What product will help block weeds naturally?
If you're looking for a natural way to suppress weeds in your garden or landscape, it's important to choose the right type of mulch. Fresh Fir, Fresh Hemlock, and Hog Fuel are the most effective options for weed prevention, but only when the area is properly weeded before application. Many people believe that dark Fir mulch blocks weeds, but that’s a common misconception. Dark Fir typically contains composted material, which can actually feed weeds rather than prevent them. Anything that includes compost or aged organic matter adds nutrients to the soil, creating the perfect environment for weeds to thrive. On the other hand, Fresh Fir, Fresh Hemlock, and Hog Fuel do not contain composted material. When laid over a clean, weeded area, they create a dense, protective barrier that blocks sunlight, slows down weed germination, and helps retain soil moisture. Fresh Hemlock is especially popular for family-friendly spaces because it splinters much less than Fir. While it’s still possible to get a splinter, Hemlock is a safer, softer option around children, pets, or high-traffic areas. In addition to weed control, these materials enhance the appearance of your landscape, regulate soil temperature, and help conserve water—making them a smart, natural choice for any outdoor space.
  • What type of rocks are best for a French drain?
River rock is the preferred material for French drains. Its rounded shape and consistent size allow water to flow freely through the drainage system while preventing soil and debris from clogging the pipe or channel. River rock is also durable and long-lasting, making it a reliable choice for managing excess water around foundations, driveways, or low-lying areas in your yard.
